Spot
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011245
A zone of finite area on a chromatogram, typically circular or elliptical, where a separated component of a mixture is located. In planar chromatography techniques like paper or thin-layer chromatography, spots become visible after development, either because the components are naturally colored or through the use of a visualization agent. The position and intensity of a spot are used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the substance, respectively.
