Retention time
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003137
The average time a volume of liquid stays inside a separator, treater or tank, found by dividing the liquid volume of the vessel by the flow rate through it. A longer retention time gives oil, water and gas more opportunity to settle apart by gravity. Design values depend on the fluid, with API Specification 12J giving guidance for oil and gas separators and heavier oils needing longer times than light crudes.
