Residence time
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004437
The average duration that a given volume of fluid remains within a process vessel, such as a separator or contactor, before exiting. It is calculated by dividing the active volume of the vessel by the volumetric flow rate of the fluid passing through it. For a three-phase separator, separate residence times are calculated for the oil, water, and gas phases to confirm adequate time for gravity-based separation, with typical liquid residence times ranging from one to five minutes.
