Right angle set

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003169

  1. A setting behaviour of cement slurry in which consistency stays low for most of the pumping time and then rises abruptly, so the thickening-time curve from a pressurized consistometer bends upward at nearly a right angle. It gives a long, safe placement window followed by rapid strength gain and a short wait-on-cement period, but leaves little warning if the slurry is contaminated or the temperature is higher than tested. Retarder and accelerator dosage must be tested at the actual bottom-hole circulating temperature.

  2. A condition where a cement slurry develops compressive strength very rapidly after a period of remaining fluid, transitioning from a pumpable state to a solid with little warning. This behavior is characterized by a nearly flat thickening time curve that turns sharply upward, forming a near right angle on the chart from a consistometer test. The rapid setting reduces waiting-on-cement time but requires precise control of retarders and accelerators to prevent premature setting.
