Seed crystal

Term · Semiconductors · MLC-T-SEM-000299

A small, single crystal used to initiate the growth of a larger single crystal from a molten or supersaturated solution. It provides a template for the atomic arrangement, dictating the crystallographic orientation of the growing material. In semiconductor manufacturing, seed crystals are used in methods like the Czochralski process to produce large silicon ingots.
