Amorphous silicon
Term · Semiconductors · MLC-T-SEM-000021
A non-crystalline allotropic form of silicon, designated a-Si, where the atoms lack long-range order and form a continuous random network. It is produced by depositing silicon atoms onto a substrate under conditions that prevent the formation of a crystal lattice, such as plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Due to its high light absorption and low manufacturing cost, amorphous silicon is used in thin-film solar cells and as the active layer in thin-film transistors for liquid crystal displays.
