a-ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000347
A peptide fragment ion that contains the N-terminus, formed when a protonated peptide dissociates at the backbone bond between the alpha carbon and the carbonyl carbon of a residue. It therefore equals the corresponding b-ion minus carbon monoxide, a difference of 27.995 u. In tandem mass spectra the a-ion appears 28 u below the matching b-ion.
