Absorbent
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000071
A substance, usually a liquid or solid, that takes up another substance, the absorbate, into its own volume through a physical or chemical process. In absorption, the molecules of the absorbate penetrate the bulk of the absorbent material, forming a solution or a compound. This process is distinct from adsorption, where molecules adhere only to the surface of the material, known as the adsorbent.
