Relating to a short-term exposure to a substance or the rapid onset of an effect following that exposure. In ecotoxicology, it describes effects observed over a short period relative to the organism's lifespan, resulting from a single or multiple exposures within that brief timeframe. Standard acute toxicity tests for fish, for example, are conducted over a 96-hour period.
