Administration of drugs rectal route
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000267
The delivery of pharmaceutical agents into the rectum, where they are absorbed through the rectal mucosa into the systemic circulation or act locally. This route is suitable for drugs that are irritating to the stomach, poorly absorbed orally, or for patients who cannot swallow. Suppositories, enemas, and creams are common dosage forms used for rectal administration, bypassing first-pass metabolism to some extent.
