Bioavailability
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001246
The fraction of an administered dose of a chemical substance that reaches the systemic circulation in an unchanged form and becomes available to exert its pharmacological or toxicological effects. It describes the rate and extent to which the active substance is absorbed from its site of administration. For orally administered drugs, bioavailability is often less than 100% due to incomplete absorption and first-pass metabolism.
