Alkene photorearrangement

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000396

An intramolecular photochemical reaction of an alkene that results in a constitutional isomer of the original reactant. This transformation occurs from an electronically excited state and involves the reorganization of the pi and sigma bonds without the loss or gain of atoms. The di-π-methane rearrangement is a well-known example of this type of reaction, converting a 1,4-diene to a vinylcyclopropane.
