Aminium ions

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000490

Cationic species formed by the protonation of an amine, where the nitrogen atom bears a positive charge and is bonded to four groups, at least one of which is hydrogen. These ions are the conjugate acids of amines and are typically formed in acidic solutions. The stability of aminium ions depends on the degree of substitution on the nitrogen atom and the nature of the attached groups.
