Auger neutralization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000950

A process where an ion approaching a surface captures an electron from the surface, leading to the emission of an Auger electron from the surface. This occurs when the potential energy of the incoming ion is sufficient to extract an electron from the solid and then cause an Auger transition within the solid. It is a mechanism for neutralizing ions at surfaces, often observed in ion scattering experiments.
