Auger effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000945
A process in which an atom with an inner-shell vacancy relaxes by ejecting an outer-shell electron, known as an Auger electron, instead of emitting an X-ray photon. This occurs when an electron from a higher energy level fills the inner-shell vacancy, and the excess energy is transferred to another electron, causing its emission. The kinetic energy of the Auger electron is characteristic of the emitting atom.
