Characteristic X-ray emission
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001888
The emission of X-rays with discrete energies that are specific to the element from which they originate. This occurs when an inner-shell electron is ejected, and an outer-shell electron transitions to fill the vacancy, releasing energy as an X-ray photon. The energies of these emitted X-rays are used for elemental identification in techniques like X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy.
