Diagram level
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003123
An atomic energy level in X-ray and electron spectroscopy that corresponds to a single vacancy created by taking one electron out of a neutral ground-state atom, whether from a core or a valence orbital. These levels give the normal, or diagram, X-ray lines, whereas multiply ionised states give satellite lines. A level with nonzero orbital angular momentum occurs as a spin-orbit pair such as 2p1/2 and 2p3/2.
