Body burden

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001402

The total amount of a specific chemical substance, such as a heavy metal or a persistent organic pollutant, present in an organism's body at a given time. It is the net result of accumulation from all sources of exposure, balanced against the processes of metabolism and excretion. Body burden is measured by analyzing samples of blood, urine, hair, or adipose tissue.
