Charge remote fragmentation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001904

A fragmentation reaction of a gas-phase ion in mass spectrometry where the bond cleavage occurs at a location not adjacent to or influenced by the site of the charge. This type of fragmentation is common in large ions with long alkyl chains, such as fatty acids or lipids, where the charge is localized on a functional group at one end. The resulting mass spectrum shows a series of product ions that reveal the structure of the uncharged part of the molecule, distinct from charge-mediated fragmentation.
