Cumulonimbus cloud
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002788
A dense, towering convective cloud that grows from cumulus and typically reaches from low levels to near the tropopause, with tops around 12 km in mid-latitudes and higher in the tropics. Its upper part spreads into an anvil, and it produces thunderstorms, heavy showers, hail, and strong gusts. Only the strongest updrafts push overshooting tops a short way into the stratosphere.
