Ionic cloud

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006107

A cloud of free analyte ions in the gas phase, such as that produced when a sample is atomized and ionized in a plasma or discharge source used in atomic spectrometry. The ions in the cloud can be extracted for mass analysis or probed spectroscopically. The term is distinct from the ionic atmosphere of oppositely charged ions around a solvated ion, which is the sense used in Debye-Hückel theory.
