Dyspnea

The subjective sensation of difficult or labored breathing, often described as shortness of breath. This symptom can arise from respiratory, cardiovascular, neuromuscular, or psychogenic causes, including exposure to certain neurotoxicants that affect respiratory muscle control. Dyspnea is a clinical symptom reported by the patient, distinct from objective signs of respiratory distress like tachypnea (rapid breathing).
