Efflorescent

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003607

Describing a crystalline hydrate that spontaneously loses water of crystallization to the atmosphere. This process occurs when the vapor pressure of the hydrate is greater than the partial pressure of water vapor in the surrounding air. Sodium carbonate decahydrate is a common example of an efflorescent substance.
