Estriol

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013078

A relatively weak natural estrogen and a major metabolite of estradiol and estrone, produced primarily by the placenta during pregnancy. Its chemical structure contains the characteristic four-ring steroid nucleus with hydroxyl groups at positions 3, 16, and 17. Because its levels rise throughout gestation, maternal serum or urine estriol concentrations are monitored as an indicator of fetal well-being and placental function, particularly in the third trimester.
