Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007025
A protein produced by the fetal liver and yolk sac, which is present in the mother's blood during pregnancy. Levels of this protein are measured in maternal serum as a screening test for certain fetal abnormalities. Elevated levels can indicate neural tube defects, while lower levels may suggest Down syndrome.
