Etiologic agent

A microorganism, chemical substance, or physical factor whose presence is required for the occurrence of a specific disease or adverse health effect. The agent initiates or promotes the pathological process, although other factors may contribute to the development and severity of the condition. For example, the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the etiologic agent of tuberculosis, while asbestos fibers are the etiologic agent for asbestosis.
