Extractive distillation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004296
A distillation technique used to separate components of a liquid mixture that have close boiling points or form an azeotrope. A high-boiling, non-volatile solvent is added to the mixture, which selectively alters the relative volatilities of the original components, making their separation by distillation feasible. For example, n-methylpyrrolidone is used as the solvent to separate butadiene from other C4 hydrocarbons in industrial processes.
