Frustration
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004690
A feature of crystalline packing in which chain stems at sites that a perfect lattice would treat alike adopt different arrangements, because not every chain can reach its lowest-energy conformation and best packing at once. The idea borrows from the general physical sense of the word, where competing interactions or geometric constraints stop every local energy preference from being met together. Spin glasses are the standard example of that general case.
