Isodirectional packing

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006178

The packing in a crystal of chains that have a direction along the axis, such as head-to-tail vinyl polymers, in which every stem points the same way along the chain axis. Mixed up-and-down packing is the alternative. Fully isodirectional packing is unlikely in synthetic polymers except in as-polymerized crystals, whereas parallel packing is found in cellulose I.
