Gas-phase basicity
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004768
A measure of the intrinsic ability of a molecule to accept a proton in the absence of solvent, expressed as the negative of the standard Gibbs energy change for the gas-phase protonation B plus H+ to BH+. The negative of the enthalpy change of the same reaction is the proton affinity, a separate quantity that differs from gas-phase basicity by an entropy term. Values are quoted in kJ/mol and rise with the stability of the protonated form.
