Headspace
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005133
The gaseous phase above a condensed liquid or solid sample within a sealed container. This gas contains volatile components from the sample that have partitioned into the space, reaching an equilibrium concentration dependent on temperature and pressure. In headspace analysis, this gas is sampled and analyzed, with results for volatile compounds often expressed in concentration units like parts per million by volume (ppmv).
