Hot state reaction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005408
A photochemical reaction that proceeds from a vibrationally excited electronic state of a reactant molecule. This occurs when the reaction rate is faster than the rate of intramolecular vibrational relaxation, meaning the molecule reacts before it reaches thermal equilibrium with its surroundings. These reactions must compete with vibrational relaxation, a process that typically occurs on a timescale of picoseconds.
