Relaxation energy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010172
The energy released by the electronic readjustment, both within the ionized atom and in its surroundings, that follows the removal of an atomic electron and lowers the energy of the final state. In photoelectron spectroscopy it makes the measured binding energy smaller than the value obtained without relaxation, as in Koopmans' theorem.
