Hypo-

A prefix used in chemical nomenclature and medical terminology to denote a lower or deficient state. In chemistry, it indicates a lower oxidation state of an element in a compound, as in hypochlorite (ClO⁻), which has a lower oxidation state for chlorine than chlorite (ClO₂⁻). In a medical or toxicological context, it signifies a deficiency or a level below the normal range, such as in hypoglycemia or hypothermia.
