Iminium ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005608
A polyatomic cation with the general structure R2C=N+R'2, characterized by a double bond between a carbon atom and a positively charged nitrogen atom. These ions are intermediates in many organic reactions, including the Mannich reaction and the Vilsmeier-Haack reaction. In mass spectrometry, iminium ions are common fragment ions formed from the cleavage of amines, amides, and other nitrogen-containing compounds, providing structural information.
