Kinetic energy release

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006353

The amount of internal energy converted into translational kinetic energy during the dissociation of an ion in the gas phase. This phenomenon is observed in mass spectrometry when a metastable ion fragments, and the released energy contributes to the broadening of the product ion peaks. It provides insights into the energetics and mechanisms of unimolecular ion decompositions.
