Microcosm

A small, self-contained experimental system designed to simulate a larger, more complex natural environment. These systems are used in ecotoxicology to study the effects of chemicals on ecological processes and interactions under controlled conditions. Microcosms can range from laboratory flasks containing microbial communities to enclosed aquatic or terrestrial environments.
