Molar refraction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007472
A measure of the total polarizability of a mole of a substance at a specific wavelength of light. It is calculated using the Lorentz-Lorenz equation, which relates the molar refraction to the substance's refractive index and its molar mass and density. This property is approximately independent of temperature and physical state, and its value can be estimated by summing the contributions from the individual atoms and bonds within the molecule.
