Neutropenia
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007924
A condition characterized by an abnormally low concentration of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, in the blood. Because neutrophils are a primary defense against bacterial and fungal infections, their reduction compromises the immune system. An absolute neutrophil count below 1,500 cells per microliter of blood is the clinical threshold for neutropenia, with counts below 500 cells per microliter indicating a severe risk of infection.
