Nucleic acid aptamers
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008129
Short single-stranded DNA or RNA molecules that fold into defined three-dimensional shapes and bind a chosen target, from small molecules to proteins, with high affinity and selectivity. They are found by an in vitro selection cycle called SELEX, in which a large random library is repeatedly bound, separated and amplified. Unlike antibodies, they are made by chemical synthesis rather than in living cells, so batches do not vary biologically.
