A prefix placed in names to indicate that six atoms form an octahedron, the solid with six vertices and eight triangular faces. It appears in the nomenclature of boranes and metal clusters, and the closo-hexaborate anion B6H6(2-) is a standard example, with its six boron atoms at the vertices.
