Arachno-
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000758
A structural prefix used to describe a polyhedral cluster of atoms, particularly in boranes and their derivatives, that is missing two vertices from the corresponding closed, or closo-, polyhedron. The resulting structure is more open and resembles a web, hence the name derived from the Greek word for spider. An arachno-borane with n boron atoms has a chemical formula of the type BnHn+6.
