Parallel effect

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008443

The shift in position of a transition state along the minimum-energy reaction path when a structure lying on that path is stabilized or destabilized, the behavior summarized by the Hammond postulate. It is called parallel because the motion lies along the reaction coordinate, in contrast to the perpendicular effect, which moves the transition state at right angles to it.
