Peristalsis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008656
The rhythmic, wave-like contractions of smooth muscle that propel contents through tubular organs, particularly in the digestive tract. This involuntary muscular action moves food from the esophagus to the stomach and through the intestines. It also occurs in other systems, such as the ureters, to move urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
