Lymphangion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006825
The functional unit of a lymphatic vessel, defined as the segment located between two successive semilunar valves. The wall of the lymphangion contains smooth muscle which contracts rhythmically to propel lymph forward through the vessel. This intrinsic pumping action, combined with the one-way function of the valves, is responsible for the movement of lymph from peripheral tissues back toward the central circulation.
