Phase ratio

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008746

The volume of mobile phase in a chromatographic column divided by the volume of stationary phase, symbol β, a dimensionless number. Because the retention factor equals the distribution constant divided by β, a smaller β gives stronger retention of an analyte with a given distribution constant. In capillary gas chromatography it is roughly the column radius divided by twice the film thickness.
