Stationary phase volume

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011340

The volume of liquid stationary phase, or of active solid or gel, held in a chromatographic column, symbol Vs, not counting any inert solid support. For a liquid film on a support it is the film volume only, and for a packed column it can be obtained from the mass of stationary phase divided by its density. Together with the mobile phase volume Vm it fixes the phase ratio, β = Vm/Vs, and the retention factor k = K·Vs/Vm, with K the distribution constant.
