Primary photochemical process

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009440

An elementary chemical step undergone by an electronically excited molecule that converts it into the first product chemically different from the reactant, the primary photoproduct. Typical steps include bond cleavage, isomerization, hydrogen abstraction and electron transfer. Photophysical decay such as fluorescence or internal conversion does not count, because it leaves the molecule's chemical identity unchanged.
