Quasi-equilibrium theory

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009773

A statistical theory describing the unimolecular decomposition of ions in the gas phase, particularly relevant in mass spectrometry. It assumes that the internal energy of an ion is rapidly randomized among all its vibrational modes before dissociation occurs. This theory predicts the rate of fragmentation based on the ion's internal energy and the properties of the transition state.
