Radiation sensitisation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013470
A process in which a chemical or biological system is changed more strongly by high-energy radiation because another entity, the radiation sensitiser, is present. The radiation is absorbed mostly nonspecifically by the surrounding medium, such as water or solvent, and the chemistry that follows comes from the products of that primary absorption. In radiotherapy, sensitisers make tumour cells more vulnerable to radiation damage.
